SaferPlaces is developing SaferCAST, an innovative early warning service for intense rainfall and urban flooding events. Already operational in the cities of Rimini, Vicenza, and Venice, the system will soon be available in Bologna and several cities in Germany.

How it works

The service operates in real time, drawing from multiple meteorological data sources and combining:

  • Nowcasting: Utilizes weather radar and rain gauge station data to provide an immediate snapshot of weather conditions, with real-time updates.
  • Forecasting: Integrates open-source weather forecasts (e.g., ICON) and/or forecasts provided by commercial partners such as MeteoBlue and Radarmeteo, to anticipate the evolution of rainfall over the coming hours.

These data are fed into a chain of high-resolution flood models that leverage artificial intelligence algorithms to rapidly simulate urban flood scenarios, intersecting potential flood areas with critical infrastructure and the most vulnerable zones.

Why it matters

SaferCAST aims to provide municipalities, multi-utilities, and civil protection agencies with an operational tool that enables them to:

  • Quickly identify at-risk areas
  • Support critical decisions such as preventive evacuations or rapid response actions
  • Integrate results into existing management systems

All this is made available through an interactive dashboard, displaying predictive scenarios in a clear and immediate way, with data export options.

Key advantages

  • Scalable: applicable to any urban or regional context
  • Highly automated: reduces analysis and response time
  • Reliable: integrates multiple data sources and advanced AI models
  • Operational now: already active in several Italian cities and expanding across Europe
